Mars Square Saturn:  When Courage Meets Resistance

The month opens with the two malefic planets locked in a tense square. While Mars square Saturn happens roughly every 12–14 months, this one is unusual because both planets are in their signs of fall. The last time this occurred was August 1996, and before that, July 1968.

Mars in Cancer wants to protect what feels familiar and secure, while Saturn in Aries looks toward the horizon, trying to build something that will support greater independence. One looks backward for safety, while the other looks forward for freedom. It is the difference between protecting what you know and striking out to build something of your own.

As a Hellenistic astrologer, I assess how well a planet can do its job in its environment, which is called planetary dignity.  Saturn wants to do a good job and will slow down to ensure mastery, but in Aries, he feels the pressure of time demanding him to speed up.  As a result, he can skip steps or not have the quality control that he normally prefers.  Mars has the opposite problem. He wants to act quickly and get things moving. But in Cancer, it can be like trying to light a match in a rainstorm.  The spark is there, but you may need to wait for the right conditions or clear the emotional energy before moving forward with confidence.

When these two planets collide, their shadow sides become easier to see. Mars can become defensive when he feels threatened, while Saturn can become rigid or uncertain when he cannot establish control. You may find yourself caught between reacting to what feels emotionally urgent and holding back because you are unsure whether the path ahead is secure.

This is why the square can feel like a checkpoint or even a crisis where desire meets reality. Both Aries and Cancer are cardinal signs. They want to initiate, solve problems, and get somewhere. But with both planets in fall, pushing harder is not necessarily the answer.

If your first instinct is to react, give yourself enough time to respond. If you normally hold back, pay attention to the emotional push that tells you something needs to change. The work is not about choosing between the past and the future, or between security and independence. It is about finding a way for one to support the other.

Think of this square as a pressure test. Something may not be working the way you expected, but that does not mean it is failing. You may simply discover where the structure needs to be reinforced. Sometimes persistence means pushing forward. Other times, it means having the patience to wait out the storm, protect the flame, and try again when the conditions are right.Mars Enters Cancer: Protecting What Matters Most

Venus in Scorpio + Mercury in Libra:  Deeper Conversations + Value Connections

Sometimes a new chapter begins with a conversation you didn’t know you needed to have. On September 10th, Venus and Mercury change signs under the New Moon in Virgo, turning the page on how you connect, communicate, and understand the people closest to you.

For the past five weeks, Venus has moved through her home sign of Libra, helping you take stock of your relationships. You may have been weighing what feels fair, noticing where the scales are tipped, and considering what you need to feel valued and respected.

When Venus enters Scorpio, the scales give way to a magnifying glass.

You’re no longer looking only at the relationship itself.  You’re examining the motivation driving the partnership.  Venus in Scorpio pays less attention to what is said and more attention to what is felt in fixed water.  She notices the pause before an answer, the change in someone’s tone, and the things left unsaid. If Libra asks, “Does this feel fair?”, Scorpio asks, “What is really driving this connection?”

Venus will spend more time in Scorpio this year. Normally, she spends about five weeks transiting each sign, but her retrograde from October 3rd through November 13th stretches this journey between Scorpio and Libra. She will spend 40 days and 40 nights reevaluating what she really wants and renegotiating her terms of engagement. Venus retrogrades every 18 months, so this is not a rare occurrence, but it does require some adjustments. What begins as a closer look at your relationships in September can become a much deeper reassessment of your values, desires, and agreements as autumn unfolds.

At the same time, Mercury enters Libra and brings the conversation back to the table. Mercury wants to hear both sides, consider another perspective, and keep the dialogue open.  But with Venus in Scorpio, keeping the conversation pleasant may not be enough.  Together these two planets are moving things from politeness to true intimacy.  Real connection requires both diplomacy and depth.

This theme intensifies on September 15th when Venus squares Pluto, bringing power dynamics and buried tensions to the surface.  Uncomfortable truths need to be unearthed within yourself.   Take stock of the friction and notice the pain points. Mercury opposes Saturn on September 18th, asking you to put words around what you’ve discovered and define what needs to change.  The goal isn’t just to restore balance, but to create relationships that can withstand your personal truth.

Monthly Dates of Note:

September 1:  Mars in Cancer squares Saturn in Aries + Mercury in Virgo sextiles Mars in Cancer. Conflicts between personal needs and responsibilities could be a major theme today. Both planets are in fall, meaning each is trying to fulfill their roles while navigating challenging circumstances. Mars experiences emotional exhaustion, and Saturn feels frustrated because he cannot complete the job as thoroughly as he would like. As a result, you may find your defensiveness is heightened. Anger can erupt when action doesn’t feel safe, and resistance can emerge when every step feels like a test.  But there is a path forward.  Mercury, the planet of the mind and communication, is in his exaltation degree.  He can find clarity and use evidence with precision.

September 10:  New Moon in Virgo + Venus moves into Scorpio + Mercury moves into Libra + Uranus stations retrograde in Gemini. Organization and making things look aesthetically pleasing is a theme for this New Moon.  A newly ingressed Mercury in Libra rules this lunation, which isn’t just interested in being efficient; he also wants things to look nice.  Mars also supports this drive to declutter around the house and adds some extra motivation to spring clean the home front.  Be careful you don’t bite off more than you can chew with Neptune also in the mix.  He can distract from the task at hand. Keep the tasks manageable with checklists along the way.  There may be some surprises with Uranus stationing retrograde, as well as some connections to the past with Venus moving into a water sign.

September 12/Rosh Hashanah:  Mercury in Libra trines Pluto in Aquarius + Mercury in Libra opposes Neptune in Aries. Gathering support for a plan comes easily today as long as you don’t assume everyone shares your vision.  With so much emphasis in the air signs, conversations flow and ideas bubble up naturally.  Ask questions and verify details.  Inspiration is abundant, but facts may be incomplete.

September 13:  Mercury in Libra trines Uranus in Gemini. Social gatherings spark new connections today.  This is an excellent day to network or brainstorm new solutions.  Stay flexible to adjust your perspective as new information comes to light.

September 14:  Sun in Virgo sextiles Mars in Cancer. Minor adjustments can bring lasting results.  Like a squirrel busily gathering nuts for the season ahead, this energy can be highly productive when you give your restless energy a meaningful task.  Focus on one item on your to-do list and knock it out of the park.

September 15:  Venus in Scorpio squares Pluto in Aquarius + Neptune in Aries sextiles Pluto in Aquarius. Maintaining peace doesn’t always bring harmony.  Sometimes you need to address what has been unresolved or buried in the past.  It may be time to reexamine agreements about resources and relationships with brutal honesty.  Uncovering opportunities and building on possibilities can come into focus.  This is a day of value judgements and reimagining the future.

September 17:  Chiron moves back into Aries.  Your attention turns back to healing old wounds surrounding independence and self-confidence.  Situations that challenge your courage aren’t always asking you to prove yourself. Sometimes they show you how much you have grown.  The path to healing is rarely straightforward.

September 18:  Mercury in Libra opposes Saturn in Aries.  Difficult conversations or delayed decisions require patience.  Double-check accountability and plans before moving forward.  Get clarity on roles.  Often, that extra step to ensure everyone agrees can save a lot of future headaches.

September 21/Yom Kippur:  Mercury in Libra sextiles Jupiter in Leo.  Good news arrives with encouraging conversations, rousing endorsements, or helpful advice.  This is a great day to learn something new, meet with a mentor, give a presentation, or have a productive team meeting.  One small conversation could change your entire outlook.

September 22/Autumn Equinox:  Sun moves into Libra.  Autumn officially arrives when the Sun moves into the sign of the scales.  Relationships, balance, and cooperation come into focus for the next month.  This is a time to strengthen partnerships by honoring healthy personal boundaries.  You achieve balance by valuing what matters most, not by keeping everyone happy.  With cardinal air at the helm for the next four weeks, social engagements flourish and fall aesthetics roll in.  Embrace the pumpkin spice lattes, football games, and muted palette of the season.

September 25:  Sun in Libra opposes Neptune in Aries.  Sometimes the ideal needs to dissolve in order for you to find your footing.  Neptune’s ability to let the ego drop away reminds us that unhealthy attachments to possibilities rob us of our immediate joy.  Allow uncertainty to lead, and realize there is grace in not having all the answers.  Releasing expectations often brings clarity.

September 26:  Full Moon in Aries + Sun in Libra trines Pluto in Aquarius. Honest assessments of partnerships give you the courage to move your agenda forward.  Anchor your relationship needs in your self-discovery. Authenticity is the goal.  Mars is in his anaretic degree in Cancer and he is the ruler of this lunation.  This is about fighting for what is emotionally important to you.  This is his last chance to fulfill his objectives as he wraps up his time in Cancer. Progressive change is possible as long as you are transparent about your needs.

September 27:  Mars moves into Leo. The planet of action moves into fixed fire.  Motivation finds fuel from the group in this sign.  He is ready to lead with conviction and enthusiasm.  Over the next 6 weeks, let your creativity and passion guide your actions.  This is an important ingress as he will retrograde in this sign in early 2027.

September 28:  Sun in Libra trines Uranus in Gemini. A new perspective can shift a plan today.  Good decisions require good information, and sometimes a missing piece of intel can arrive serendipitously.  Stay flexible and be open to suggestions.

September 30:  Mercury moves into Scorpio.  Like a detective searching for clues, the planet of communication digs beneath the surface to find overlooked information.  This is a feminine sign who can read between the lines, listen intently, and ask probing questions.  Surface-level conversations lose their luster.  Search for deeper meaning, research pet projects, and follow threads that lead to a deeper understanding. Just a heads up though: Mercury is going to spend over 2 months in this sign with his retrograde later this fall. This is a far cry from his normal 2 weeks transiting each sign. It’s time to get cozy with the darker topics and the deeper feelings.
